INTERVIEW with Choukri Ben Meriem

I grew up in La Seyne-sur-Mer where I started taking acting classes in several different settings. Then I moved to Paris, which allowed me to act in a few short films. During these different shoots as an actor, I began to take an interest in technique, how things worked behind the camera, etc. And since I wanted to tell stories, I made my first short film "Alike". It was in Montreal in 2014. I then shot "Storytelling". "La Seyne Legends" is my third production.

How long have you been doing movies? How did you decide to start making movies?

For about 20 years.
When I was in a drama class, I realized that I liked being on stage, I felt I’m free.

Why did you do this project?
I was looking for a new project. And I came across a series about a treasure hunt on Netflix. Afterwards, I remembered about a local legend called the two brothers. So I combined them.

(If you can say). How much budget did you have to do this project?

Was it self-funded or did you get budget/producers/investors? The first episode was self-funded.

How long did it take from the initial idea to being able to release?

The process took about 5 years.

Are you happy with the result?
Yeah, and especially when a lot of people loved it.

What phase is this project in right now? Are you in the initial phase of sending it to festivals, middle phase or finishing the circuit?
Now, I’m looking for the funding from different sources. For now, it’s the beginning of the festival circuit.

How has your experience been with the festivals so far? Where do you think they should improve?
There are a lot of festivals that can fit a project. I think filmmakers need some visibility online like video interviews.

Could you tell us which platforms you use to submit your entries to festivals?

FilmFreeway.

Normally, filmmakers use many references, favorite directors, favorite movies, etc. Were you inspired by any director or film? If so, tell us your references.
There are a lot of movies but today I would say The Matrix. It brought so much for people and filmmakers.

Your favorite movie?

A multitude of movies.

Favorite series?
How to Make It in America.

Do you see yourself making movies in 5 years? Where do you see yourself?

Hopefully, still making movies and other creative projects.

Do you have any other project in mind?
La Seyne Legends sequel is officially in the works.

What do you ask for the future? (cinematographically speaking)

Being involved in different kind of projects.

Your best experience in a movie theater?
Laughing out loud among the audience. There’s kind of connection, which is great.
